Emma's Story

Emma is a 14 year old girl who has developed a condition called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy.  This is a very painful condition which causes a disturbance of the circulation in the affected limb, leading to pins and needles and alterations of colour of the limb.

She felt her knee give way in October 2008 and presented to Alder Hey in February 2009.  This condition responds to intensive physiotherapy and hydrotherapy which allows for specialist intervention using equipment to add variety and distraction during a very painful treatment.
